Wernher von Braun

Jobs4Space Space History – Wernher von Braun, known as the “Father of German Rocket Science” surrendered to the United States at the end of World War II. He would eventually contribute to the U.S. Space program in big ways. In 1957, von Braun’s team worked to launch the first U.S. satellite. He also sat as the first director of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The first U.S. satellite, named Explorer 1, launched on January 31, 1958. (credit: NASA)
